Bread, the love we spread

Bread, the love we spread

It’s everywhere, enjoyed at any hour, and pairs with every meal. Its countless varieties make it one of the oldest staples humanity has ever known. No doubt about it… we’re talking about bread! To celebrate World Bread Day, let’s shine a light on this essential delight that we simply can’t live without.

We’ve all got that one person at home who sets off on a mission first thing in the morning to grab fresh bread from the local bakery. And who could blame them? Bread is deeply woven into our everyday lives. Here in Mauritius, we love enjoying our homemade bread spread with butter and topped with cheddar cheese, stuffed with our famous “gato piment,” or even as a side to last night’s dinner leftovers. Like it or not, bread is the foundation of so many of our favourite meals, which makes it part of our local culture.

But did you know just how far bread has travelled through time to reach us? In the beginning, humans ground wild grains into a paste, which they baked on heated stones. Then came the Egyptians, who mastered the art of leavened bread through fermentation (shoutout to science!). From there, bread made its way around the globe, becoming the one food you’ll find simply everywhere. So, it’s slowly but surely conquering the entire world!

In short, bread has crossed centuries and evolved with cultures, but one thing is certain: it’s here to stay. No matter where you are or how you like it, bread is universal. It brings people together at the table, satisfies our hunger with ease, and never puts our health at risk. There’s no debate – bread’s something we need to celebrate.

And just like that catchy childhood song says: Un pain ti godon troi banann ki… bonn fet zot tou!
